Additional FTP Accounts

Permit password-restricted FTP
access to your domain.

All FastVirtual web hosting plans include one or more FTP accounts as standard. Further FTP accounts can be optionally added if required.

Additional FTP accounts are often used to provide developers with access to your domain, while excluding them from your account control panel. They can also be used to allow authenticated users to upload files to predetermined directories or subdomains.

Managing FTP Accounts

The FTP management system allows you to specify a separate username and password for each FTP account. You can restrict access to specific directories. If you don't want users to upload files, you can further restrict them to read-only access.

Additional FTP accounts use the same hostname (i.e. "ftp.yourdomain.com"), but have their own username and password. Following authentication, the FTP server applies the specified access restrictions, then logs in normally.

FTP accounts are managed through the FTP management system, available from the "Hosting" area of your account control panel.

Note: All FastVirtual web hosting plans include a number of FTP accounts as standard, ranging from 1 for the Silver hosting plan, up to 26 for the Platinum Plus plan. Additional FTP accounts beyond those provided with the account are subject to fees. Please see the Hosting Plan Comparison for pricing information.

Custom FTP Messages

You can configure the FTP server to display customized messages when users log in, or access a particular directory.

Note: Support for this feature is dependent on the user's FTP client software.

FTP Login Welcome Message

  1. Use a standard text editor, such as Notepad, to create a text file named "welcome.msg". This file should contain the message you wish to display when users log in to your FTP server.
  2. Upload this this file to your document root (/htdocs).

The message will be automatically displayed the next time an FTP user logs in to your FTP server.

FTP Directory Message

  1. Use a standard text editor, such as Notepad, to create a text file named ".message". This file should contain the message you wish to display when users access the directory.
  2. Upload this this file the applicable directory.

The message will be automatically displayed the next time an FTP user logs in the applicable directory.
