My control panel includes the option to lock my domain names. What does this do?

If you often edit your domain name settings, locking a domain adds an extra security step and requires that you first unlock the domain name before you can make any changes. Domain names that are locked are also protected at the registry level from being transferred away from FastVirtual.

Locking a domain name does not prevent you, or anyone else, from making changes, or from transferring the domain name. It simply requires that the domain name is unlocked before this can be done.

Can I lock/unlock multiple domain names at the same time?

Yes. Create a group, then add your domain names to that group. Any tasks you perform on the group, including locking/unlocking, will then be applied to all domain names within that group.

To create a new group, access the "Domains" area of your account control panel and select "Groups". Then simply add your new group, and select the domain names to include in the group.

When making changes, remember to select the group instead of the individual domain name.

How do I configure my one-page web? What is this?

The one-page web allows you to create a single page with your contact details and company logo, or other image. The image can be in .gif or .jpg format, and up to 500 KB in size. There are several templates to choose from, and each template includes pre-set areas for your contact information and logo.

To configure your one-page web, access the "Domains" area of your account control panel and select the domain name you wish to edit. Click "Configure my one page web" and follow the instructions.

How do I enable URL forwarding? What is this?

By enabling URL forwarding and specifying a destination URL for the forward, when someone visits your domain URL, they are automatically forwarded to the URL you specified. The forward can be to another domain, a directory on another domain, or any other qualified URL.

To enable URL forwarding, access the "Domains" area of your account control panel and click "Web service". Highlight the domain name you wish to edit from the "Domain list", and click the ">>" button to move this to "Selected domains". Then select "Redirect my domain to an existing URL", enter the URL you wish to forward to, and click "Continue with changes".

How do I enable frame forwarding? What is this?

By enabling frame forwarding and specifying a destination URL for the forward, when someone visits your domain URL, they are automatically forwarded to the URL you specified, but their browser continues to display your domain URL. The forward can be to another domain, a directory on another domain, or any other qualified URL.

Unlike URL forwarding, frame forwarding loads the destination URL in a frame, so the URL displayed in the visitor's address bar remains that of your domain, not the actual URL of the page that was loaded.

To enable frame forwarding, access the "Domains" area of your account control panel and click "Web service". Highlight the domain name you wish to edit from the "Domain list", and click the ">>" button to move this to "Selected domains". Then select "Frame forward my domain to an existing URL", enter the URL you wish to call in the frame, provide a title for your page that contains the frame (you may also provide a page description, keywords, and a shortcut icon URL, but this is optional), and click "Continue with changes".

Once the initial frame forward has occurred, how can I make links on the page that was loaded appear to be on the domain that was forwarded?

First add the following HTML tag to the pages that you are forwarding to:

<BASE TARGET="_top">

This will ensure that the browser breaks out of the frame when following links. If you proceed without doing this, when visitors follow a link, your forwarded domain will open a frame within the current frame, and this behavior will continue with the more links they follow.

Next, change the URLs in your links on the page you are forwarding to, so that they reference the forwarding domain, and not the domain on which they are located.

For example, if "myforward.com" is the domain that is using frame forwarding, and "http://www.mydomain.com/myfiles/" is the URL that is being forwarded to, and you want to link to "http://www.mydomain.com/myfiles/mypage.html", you should change this link to "http://www.myforward.com/mypage.html".

What is the purpose of frame forwarding statistics?

Each time the server forwards a visitor to your target URL, this is appended to a log file. The frame forwarding statistics page provides access to this information, and displays daily, monthly and yearly summaries of all forwarding activity.

Frame forwarding loads the target URL in a frame, and a hit is logged each time that frame is loaded. Links from the page that is loaded within the frame will not generate further hits unless those links reference the forwarding domain in their URL (as per this previous FAQ).

For example, if "myforward.com" is the domain that is using frame forwarding, and "http://www.mydomain.com/myfiles/" is the URL that is being forwarded to, if that page includes a link to "http://www.mydomain.com/myfiles/mypage.html", no hit would be logged when that link is followed. However, if this link is changed to reference the forwarding domain (as per this FAQ), a hit would be logged each time the link was followed.

What are email forwards? How can I configure email forwards?

Email forwards are email addresses that automatically forward mail to other email addresses. For example, you could set up email forwards for support, services, info, etc. @yourdomain.com, yet receive mail sent to any of these addresses via a single destination email account.

FastVirtual provides single, multiple, and global email forwards. Single email forwards are used when a single recipient address is required. Multiple email forwards enable you forward mail to up to 15 separate recipient addresses. A global email forward will forward all mail addressed to your domain to a single recipient address.

To set up and email forward, access the "Email" section of your account control panel and select "Email forward" under "Add new mail service". Enter the forward name and the destination email address, and click "Create".

To set up a multiple email forward, access the "Email" section of your account control panel and select "Multiple email forward" under "Add new mail service". Enter the forward name and the recipient email addresses (one per line), and click "Create".

To set up a global email forward, access the "Email" section of your account control panel and select "Global email forward" under "Add new mail service". Enter the destination email address and click "Create".

Note: To protect customers from spam, FastVirtual automatically blocks all mail sent to forwards from mail servers included on the following blacklists:

  • relays.osirusoft.com
  • inputs.orbz.org
  • relays.ordb.org

I already registered my domain name with another registrar, but I like your service better. How can I transfer my domain name to FastVirtual?

Transferring your domain name to FastVirtual from your current registrar is easy, and acts as a standard domain renewal. All that's required is a simple email acknowledgement from the specified administrative contact -- if you registered the domain name yourself, this is probably you!

To transfer your domain name to FastVirtual, simply access the "Domains" section of your account control panel, select "Transfer domains", and enter the domain name you wish to transfer. The transfer process is usually completed within 5 days, and will not cause any downtime for your web site.

Note: .ws and .tv domains cannot currently be transferred.

How do specify a static IP address as the target for my domain name?

To have your domain name point to a static IP address, access the "Domains" area of your account control panel and click "Web service". Highlight the domain name you wish to edit from the "Domain list", and click the ">>" button to move this to "Selected domains". Then select "Use a simple DNS entry", enter the IP address you wish your domain to point to, and click "Continue with changes".

Can I edit and apply settings to multiple domain names at the same time?

Yes. Create a group, then add your domain names to that group. Any tasks you perform on the group will then be applied to all domain names within that group.

To create a new group, access the "Domains" area of your account control panel and select "Groups". Then simply add your new group, and select the domain names to include in the group.

When making changes, remember to select the group instead of the individual domain name.

What are A records, MX records and CNAME records?

A records are address records. They are used to assign IP addresses to host (domain) names. This is the standard record for translating host names into IP addresses.

MX records are mail exchange records. They are used to create mail routes for host (domain) names.

CNAME records are canonical name records. They are used to add subdomains  that point to other domains or subdomains. CNAME records must point to other host names. They cannot point to their own host name, an IP address, or a URL.

How can I view all my active domain names?

Simply access the "Domains" area of your account control panel to view a list of all your active domain names.
